And even with that patch applied, there’s still technical issues. A “patch” that’s the same size as the game itself. The moment you start up the game you’ll be greeted by the day one patch. Most of the problems in Kingdom Come: Deliverance are technical ones. Moving forward and getting better armor and weapons comes with a feeling of satisfaction. In fact, it’s one of the better parts of the games. His story as he progresses from blacksmith boy who only knows the basics of swordplay, to a full-fledged knight is compelling and interesting. Eventually he sets out to exact revenge and save the kingdom. In this game you take control of Henry, the son of a blacksmith whose family is killed during political turmoil in the kingdom of Bohemia. Unfortunately, while some of my concerns turned out to be somewhat unfounded, others definitely were legitimate. ![]() Obviously this comes with some concerns about how fun the game is, and I voiced these concerns in a previous article. And it does! In a market where the term “medieval” is typically paired with “fantasy,” Warhorse Studios decided that they wanted their Kickstarter project to stand apart as a purely realistic approach to the period. That’s what Kingdom Come: Deliverance sets out to, well, deliver. In many cases, the most interesting games are the ones that need a little more time to work things out.Historical realism. I won't say that you should never buy a game at launch - that feels a bit broad - but you should always know what you're getting into with a launch game, particularly from a smaller studio. This is the case with a thousand different games, whether they hit the market at a full retail release or in early access - someone who buys No Man's Sky today will get a vastly different and vastly superior experience to someone who bought it at launch. Little by little, this game will come closer to realizing the game I want it to be, and when it seems close enough I'll give it a shot. First we'll fix the egregious bugs, then we'll do some gameplay refinement, then we might even get mods to smooth out the annoying bits. And so my course of action is pretty clear: wait six months for the developer to get things in order and then see where we're at. ![]() Since I didn't write about the game at launch, I'm really just an average player interested in the game at this point. Some games release in more finished states, some in less, but this one in particular was raising some red flags for a retail release that looks something more like early access. But this is the curse of the reviewer and the earlier adopter: you are inevitably playing the worst version of the game, a product that can only improve with more content and technical refinement. This isn't the worst news in the world, and I'm sure that this game will, in fact, get much better with time. Developer Warhorse recently gave it another massive patch to start work on things, but cautioned that some of the game's more extensive problems would take more time. Even positive reviews for the game can't fail to mention framerate issues and crashing issues that are exacerbated by a restrictive save system, not to mention the usual suite of broken quests and random glitches. And yet the game continues forward to an eventual release (this is actually the most surprising part), and now there's a retail copy in our digital hands.īut guess what - there are a bunch of bugs! That this game shipped with technical issues feels like the least surprising news I've heard since Red Dead Redemption 2's delay. ![]() It's massive in both scope and concept, which is worrying considering the fact that this is coming from a small to mid-tier developer and that a faithful execution of this idea feels like it would strain even Rockstar's resources. ![]() A new, intriguing idea garners interest from a wide swath of the Internet, raising both tantalizing criticisms of mainline genre games and genuinely new solutions. You feel like you could have written the history of this game's release years before it ever came out.
